Interior Design and Interior Decorating

Interior Decoration and Interior Design, although related disciplines, are different in terms of their application. Interior Decoration is the process of decorating a house with regards to finishes (for example wallpaper and paint, choice of furniture and fittings as well as adding finishing touches and decorations such as paintings and objets d’art. All of this provide a certain “feel” to a house but essentially the underlying structure of the house is not changed.

“Interior Design and Décor”

Interior decoration is normally professionally done by Interior Decorators although recently the trend has been for people to learn about Interior Decorating through various courses or books and then apply the techniques themselves-usually on a shoestring budget. The whole objective of Interior Decorating is to make a house aesthetically pleasing and at the same time, unique, since it should reflect the owner’s specific personality and tastes.

Interior design on the other hand is more integrated with the architecture of a building and a professional Interior Designer will work closely with architects and builders to make choices regarding the integral

When you are planning a home’s interiors, one of the elements that must be addressed is tables for lamps to sit on, drinks on coasters when friends and family are over, and the decorative element that makes the table more of a focal point than just for function.  Through this article you will learn the different characteristics that go into designing and using end tables that are used in the home and office.

Materials used in End tables

Solid Wood Construction

This is by far the strongest construction method, most pleasing to the eye, and more costly than other materials that make up these occasional tables.  Most name brand end table manufactures use solid woods such as oak, cherry or mahogany in their designs.

Veneered Composite Wood

This type of construction can be very high quality, but it all depends on the quality of raw material that the veneer comes from.  Most for all practical purposes, the veneered top over a composite wood end table is less expensive than a

Emphasis and dimensions to wall art and decor are added by paneling as well as warmth and emphasis to the entirety of the room. Walls tend to come alive when you do applications of faux finishing which underscore and complement a room’s decoration scheme.

Wall art and decor also consist of Paneling with wood that has been stained on walls impart value that is decorative with the structure of the woodwork. The depth, richness and warmth of the grains of wood just cannot be duplicated by anything else. This can go from a simple headboard in a cottage in the country or a stately beveled panel sweep that has fluted pilaster accents in drawing rooms.

You can also create wall art and decor that look like marbled veining, granite speckles, wood grains and even old leather patina. This establishes the décor and tone and adds varied interests to walls, converting them into works of art in and of themselves.

Recession Proof Your Interior Design

If you make your living as an interior designer or decorator the current economy has got to be hurting your business. When the economy is slow, many people who might otherwise hire an interior designer or decorator are forced to move such a ‘non-essential’ service to the bottom of their priority list. If you haven’t felt the pinch yet, brace yourself as your business could take a drastic nose-dive during an economic recession. Nobody really needs interior design services, especially in have-not times.

There’s also the fact that so many of your days are spent on the business-side of design; negotiating with contractors, waiting for deliveries to arrive, billing, gathering quotes, and so on. This is all time that doesn’t directly generate revenue for your interior design or decorating business, and when client billings are already meager, this can really hurt your financial situation.

Maybe you’re one of the many trained interior decorators who have ended up working in retail for a 100% commission. If the economy gets worse and you’re working purely on commission, where does that leave you? Even in good times, if you work for 100% commission

What Is Interior Design and How Is It Different From Interior

To begin this journey, first an attempt must be made to answer the question, ‘What is Interior Design’; The National Council for Interior Design Qualification offers up the following definition: ‘is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive’. Comparing this to the definitions provided by The Free Dictionary for an interior decorator: ‘also called interior designer a person whose profession is the planning of the decoration and furnishings of the interior of houses, shops, etc.’ and ‘a person whose profession is the painting and wallpapering of houses’

Well it is understandable, based on the two definitions above, why there are two camps. One camp holds that the interior designer is held to a higher standard and has significantly more training and design responsibilities than the interior decorator, and then there are those that bunch them all together as one and the same. There are those that look at the designer as a version of an architect and those that look at them

Interior Design and Decorating and Kids

There are certain things you have to plan when decorating a kid’s room such as the design concept, color theme, sleeping furniture, layout, storage space for toys, study furniture, play area, and decor accents such as canvas wall art and area rugs. When planning which pieces to get for your kid’s room, consider how many children will be occupying the room, their ages, gender, and personal preferences of your kids.

1. Design concept – When discussing the design theme with your child, consider his or her tastes and practical issues such as how soon your kid will outgrow the design theme. When kids get older they will outgrow certain design themes such as a pirate themed bedroom or a fantasy inspired design.

You can still implement fancy designs in small decor pieces that can easily be changed or replaced when your child gets older. Instead of having a miniature pirate ships made as a bed, you can paint a mural of pirate figures and ships. When your kid tires of this concept, you can easily paint over the wall.

2. Color theme – Colors have an effect

How do I get clients to the point of choosing their fabrics?

Getting clients to make a decision regarding fabric can be a challenge. I usually start by asking clients to provide three photos of rooms that they like the “feeling” of and three rooms that they dislike. Make sure to explain what you mean by the “feeling” of a room, as often clients hit a snag because they may like the feeling of a room, but dislike the side table. Explain to them that no room they find in a magazine is likely to be what they would consider perfect, and that is why you are designing a room especially for them.

Take notes when they explain the reasons why they like certain rooms and why they don’t like others. If working with a couple, I usually ask them to both participate in this exercise so I can understand their differences. Then I may study the photos to understand the mood that they are both trying to achieve. Husbands can be reluctant, so I try to lighten the mood by joking with them. “Pink and ruffles it is!” They

Great Plans for Interior Design and Decorating

We started with the carpeting, which the client wanted to keep. It had blue and grey tones, so I used that as my starting point for the interior design of this living room. I found a wonderful fabric with a large damask pattern. Instead of overwhelming the room I opted to use the Damask for the window panels. I trimmed the tops of the panels with a coordinating trim.

The sofas were custom-made by my craftsmen to the size and specifications of the client’s wants and needs. The feel and design for this living room was one that creates a sense of balance. That is why I chose to center the sofas. I also centered two black console tables on either end of the windows in the room. I then added mirrors sized to fit into the panel molding above these console tables. The mirrors reflected the lighting from the crystal chandelier and add a sense of glamour to the design.

The client wanted artwork that made a real statement. The painting we chose for the focal point on the wall certainly has achieved that look. It adds color and

General Considerations
One common practice in all designs is to repaint and design the walls. You can add decorative patterns to the walls or simply paint them in rich colors.
